Echocardiography

Echocardiography

During your child’s visit, we may perform a heart ultrasound, or echocardiogram. This is a non-invasive and safe procedure that does not hurt your child. A small device called a probe is placed on the child’s chest, allowing us to see an actual picture of the heart on a monitor. This allows the cardiologist to make sure the heart appears healthy and pumps blood well. This test usually takes about 30 minutes to complete but the cardiologist may take extra time to ensure he has the best possible pictures of your child’s heart. Since your child needs to lie down and be as still as possible for the echocardiogram, toddlers may be calmed during the test by watching a video they enjoy on their parents’ phone, if available.
